Mediterranean Pain Forum 2023
This congress is aimed at all medical pain professional figures, both medical specialists, such as anesthetist, orthopedist, neurosurgeon, physiatrist, general practitioners, and last but not least, our nurses, who want to strengthen their technical skills or who want to get a good overview of the main topics of interest in pain medicine.
You will have the opportunity to learn the main characteristics of chronic pain and its treatment. The basic notions will be provided in order to be able to conduct an accurate “assessment” of a patient with chronic pain.
Some topics of frequent interest are also be featured, such as the main minimally invasive interventional treatments and possible complications. Fortunately, medical science is meeting in this field, proposing ever new drugs and techniques, such as radiofrequency and spinal cord stimulation.

E-CAP Controlled Closed Loop SCS
Dr. Jan Willem Kalleward talks about ECAP controlled closed loop spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and its outcomes after 24 months in the EVOKE study, a double-blind clinical trial. He explains that chronic pain is a complex issue and emphasizes the need for multidimensional assessments based on the guidelines of the consortium and neuromodulation society clinical trial. Dr. Kalleward emphasizes the significance of considering a more holistic outcome criterion, rather than just pain scores, in the EVOKE study.

Emerging Ethical Concepts in Interventional Pain Medicine
Dr. Megan K. Applewhite discusses bioethics, focusing on disparities of care in marginalized populations. She explains bioethics foundational terms and emphasizes the value of justice, beneficence, and respect for autonomy. Dr. Applewhite then explores disparities in healthcare, chronic pain diagnosis, and medical treatment for marginalized people. She draws attention to the paucity of research comparing disparities of care in marginalized populations. Finally, she discusses the ongoing efforts and opportunities both in the scientific community and at a national level.
