Dr. Elnar Ottestad presents peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), describing this technology as a beneficial continuation of treatment following spinal cord stimulation when spinal cord implants begin to lose efficacy. Dr. Ottestad offers an overview of nerve interventions, including nerve blocks, pulse radio frequency, radiofrequency ablation, and cryoablation, as useful approaches that help indicate PNS implant placement. This is followed by a discussion of challenges regarding traditional and current PNS that include implant placement problems as well as advances that are improving applications and outcomes. Dr. Ottestad also describes a new treatment algorithm for pain neuromodulation with PNS.
