Biography

Dr. Chapman is a board certified physician in Pain Management and Anesthesiology. He is the medical director of the Spine and Pain Institute of New York, and has privileges at both NYU Langone Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital. As the director of pain management at Staten Island University Hospital, which is part of the North Shore LIJ system, he leads a team of ten pain physicians.

He completed his Interventional Pain Management Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio in 2006, and his Anesthesiology residency at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, New York prior to that. While at the Cleveland Clinic Dr. Chapman won the “Ethlene R. Smith’s Most Outstanding Fellow” award.

Dr. Chapman teaches residents and fellows the field of pain management and is actively involved in lecturing both nationally and internationally. Dr. Chapman frequently serves as a pain management board examiner for certification on the Fellowship of Interventional Pain Practice Pain Boards, an international pain management boards which tests in both the United States and Europe.

He has won numerous peer validated awards including New York Magazine’s ‘Best Doctors’ and the New York Times ‘Superdocs’ as well as several other awards such as the ‘America’s Top Anesthesiologists’ , ‘Most compassionate doctors’ award, to name a few. Moreover, Dr. Chapman was on the advisory board of the NYS Worker’s Compensation Board. Here, he assisted in writing the current worker’s compensation guidelines for the treatment of chronic pain.

Dr. Chapman volunteers at clinics for uninsured or underinsured patients on Staten Island at both the Medical Arts Pavilion clinic at Staten Island Hospital North and the Community Health Center on Port Richmond Avenue. As a native Staten Islander he gets great satisfaction in helping in the care of the underserved communities of Staten Island.

When treating his patients he takes a multidisciplinary approach. He works in close collaboration with referring physicians including neurologists, internists, and surgeons in an effort to avoid or potentially delay surgery, as well as to facilitate in making an unavoidable surgery more precise.

Dr. Chapman is recognized for his technical expertise in minimally invasive treatment modalities for spinal stenosis and herniated discs. His practice was involved in the pivotal study on the MILD (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) procedure. He is also at the forefront of pain management treatments such as endoscopic discectomy for painful herniated discs and endoscopic radiofrequency ablation for patients that have failed conventional radiofrequency. He is considered a thought leader in spinal cord stimulation and an expert in stimulation for the treatment of pelvic pain.
