Working activity

Doctor Carmelo Attilio Costa, from October 2002 to today, has been responsible for the functional pain therapy unit of Humanitas – Catanese Oncology Center, a private clinic accredited by the NHS. He was also responsible from 2005 to 2010 for the Pain Medicine Center of the Catania Center of Medicine and Surgery, a private clinic accredited by the NHS. From January 2008 to 2010 he was responsible for the Anesthesia Service of Humanitas – Catanese Oncology Centre, private clinic accredited with the NHS From 2002 to 2005 he was responsible for the Pain Therapy Center of the Morgagni Clinic in Catania, private clinic accredited with the NHS From July 1991 to October 2002 he served as a Medical Assistant before and subsequently second level medical director, at the 1st Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Pain Therapy Service of the Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania. From 1989 to 1991 he served as a hospital medical assistant at the Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Pain Therapy Service of the S. Croce Hospital in Cuneo. From 1987 to 1989 he served as a hospital medical assistant at the Anesthesia and Pain Therapy Service of the Saluzzo hospital (CN).

Qualifications and specializations

Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Catania on 07/08/1982 with a final grade of 110/110 cum laude.
Specialization in Anesthesia and Resuscitation at the University of Catania in 1985 with a final grade of 50/50 cum laude.
Specialization in Rheumatology at the University of Catania in 1989 with a final grade of 50/50 cum laude.
Attendance of numerous professional training courses aimed at in-depth and specialized knowledge of the diagnosis and reasoned treatment of pain.
Attendance at numerous national and international centers to acquire technical skills in carrying out invasive pain relief procedures.
Speaker in Italy and abroad at medical conferences whose main theme was the diagnosis and treatment of pain.
You have acquired particular expertise in the diagnosis and minimally invasive surgical treatment of orofacial pain. He is particularly expert in the use of electrical current, radio frequency and otherwise, in the treatment of neuropathic pain syndromes.

Activities and projects

Dr Carmelo Attilio Costa has organized numerous meetings, conferences and periodic professional training courses with the aim of disseminating and teaching specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of pain.
He was scientific coordinator of the nationally distributed medical journal entitled “Pain Medicine“.
He was a member of the steering committee of the SICD (Italian Society of Pain Clinicians) with the role of Vice President responsible for Southern Italy.
For the 2012/13 Academic Year he received the teaching assignment at the II level University Master in Algological Sciences at the University of Messina.
For the academic year 2013/2014 and 2015/2016 he received the assignment of teaching pain therapy at the School of Specialization of Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Pain Therapy of the University of Catania.

He is President of the “Prometeo-No to useless pain” Association, a non-profit association whose aim is to spread knowledge of pain and therapies aimed at combating it in Italy and abroad.

He is co-founder of the ECA scientific project (Continuing Education in Algology) through which he organizes professional training courses for aspiring Algologists on the pathophysiology, semiotics and therapy of pain in cancer patients and courses on the mini-invasive antalgic treatment of spinal pain.

Since September 2015 he has been responsible for the Sicilian regional group of Federdolore-SICD and organizes courses and conferences for the training of the pain therapy network in Sicily.

He was a specialist medical consultant for the company Medtronic, a world leader in the design, manufacturing and sale of sophisticated medical equipment for the treatment of particularly difficult pain (electrical spinal cord stimulators and totally implanted infusion pumps delivering intrathecal morphine and other antalgic mixtures) . On behalf of the aforementioned company he organized training courses and offered specialist technical support to those doctors who wanted to start operating on the spinal cord or peripheral nerves to control pain.
He has published articles relating to the diagnosis and treatment of persistent and chronic pain syndromes in various magazines and books in Italy and abroad.
