Intradiscal BMAC for Disc Regeneration after Microdiscectomy
Dr. Ikwuegbuenyi, a Post-Doc Research Fellow at Weill Cornell Medicine, presents findings from a study evaluating the safety and feasibility of using Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) as an adjunct to microdiscectomy in treating lumbar disc herniation. The team found that BMAC injections led to reduced pain scores and increased disc hydration over a one-year period, with no reported infections or adverse events. MRI analysis showed improved nucleus pulposus hydration and size. This early data supports BMAC’s regenerative potential in spinal surgery, laying the foundation for future RCTs and combining BMAC with annular repair strategies.
