Dr. Standiford Helm discusses peripheral nerve stimulation and the advancements in power delivery. While there has been a high demand for peripheral nerve stimulation, there has also been some difficulties during the optimization of power options. This led to the increase in wireless power transfer research that is helping advance capabilities of targeting deep neural targets. Dr. Helm says more research is still needed.

Hosted by Tim Deer, MD, and Dawood Sayed, MD, the purpose of this Think Tank is to have an open discussion between clinicians, scientists, administrators and industry to advance the field of interventional pain management. SPR Sprint faculty kick off this jam-packed session with Drs. Amit Gulati, Mehul Desai and Shalini Shaw opening up about first line PNS™ for the back and beyond. Krishnan Chakravarthy, MD, and Alexios Caryannopoulos, MD speak on behalf of Mainstay Medical on the topic of restorative neurostimulation for intractable chronic low back pain. Drs. Einar Ottestad, David Spinner and Jennifer Hah take the stage for Nalu to discuss small size, without compromise, expanding the patient population in PNS. Dr. Stanley Golovac speaks on Epimed’s behalf and shares innovation in RF, and improving the safety and efficacy of RF ablation. An Abbott roundtable follows with the theory and application of RF ablation in pain management. Doctor.com and Curogram share telemedicine and texting simplified.

The ASPN mentoring program provides a distinctive and valuable offering intended to develop the talent knowledge and leadership skills of ASPN members in order to advance the scientific understanding, supportive patient engagement and clinical application of pain medicine treatments. Dr. Amit Gulati discusses the mechanisms of action, technical overview and literature review of short-term PNS. Dr. Raimu Nado goes over techniques and indications and Dr. Christophe Gilligan shares a review of medial branch nerve stimulation, mechanisms of action and long-term data for medial branch nerve stimulation. Dr. Timothy Deer and Dr. Dawood Sayed close it out with an informative Q & A.

Dr. Spinner discusses the value of being well trained in the use of ultrasound in pain management. He also discusses the future use of ultrasonography in combination with more advanced peripheral nerve simulators. Dr. Spinner talks about the importance of training physicians in the use of ultrasound and different certification processes, including becoming credentialed in sonography through the Certified Interventional Pain Sonologists (CIPS) exam. He explains the importance of both fluoroscopy and ultrasound and why the World Academy of Pain Medicine Ultrasonography (WAPMU) and the World Institute of Pain work so well together in educating physicians in the diagnostic aspect of pain medicine.
