Peter Staats, MD, MBA, President – WIP

Dr. Peter Staats presents an overview of spinal cord stimulation from its origins, which include the gate control theory to the first applications of electrode stimulation for pain management. Dr. Staats explains that challenges of traditional spinal cord stimulation involved historically inconsistent clinical success and high failure rates — problems that persisted until the introduction of innovative technologies. Dr. Staats mentions that recent advances in spinal neuromodulation such as high frequency, ultra high/low frequency, Nalu wave, and burst stimulation, among others, are improving clinical outcomes for back pain. These progressive techniques demonstrate the potential benefits of electrical stimulation for whole body pain.

Dr. Robert Levy discusses the science of neuromodulation and its efficacy from numerous studies. He compares the mechanism of action of tonic, high frequency, and burst stimulation. Dr. Levy reveals, via current literature, that DRG stimulation has the most therapeutic effect and explains why. He concludes with promising data on new wave-forms being studied.

Dr. Peter Staats discusses the introduction, advancement, and the future of neuromodulation for back pain. He reviews many studies comparing different waveforms (tonic, high frequency stimulation, and burst stimulation) for treating LBP as well as discussing stimulation of the DRG. He concludes with optimistic data on using a peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) device percutaneously to treat back pain via the medial branch nerve.
