Dr. Tibor Racz discusses an effective and safe technique for sphenopalatine ganglion blockade. This is used to treat intractable facial pain and headaches. The anatomy of the ganglion is detailed as it pertains to function and location of the branching nerves. Due to the complexity of the facial anatomy surrounding the ganglion, he demonstrates in great detail different entry approaches, by identifying anatomical land marks for accurate and safe needle advancement, as well as proper patient positioning. Fluoroscopic images show bony landmarks to ensure accurate needle placement. He discusses injectates, his recommended volumes, as well as needle types and entry angles. Expected outcomes are discussed as well as known complications.
