Review of Current Studies for Intradiscal Autologous and Allogenic Products

Published on June 21, 2022

Sudhir Diwan, MD

Dr. Sudhir Diwan presents a review of current studies describing the use of regenerative medicine, specifically intradiscal injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for interventional pain management. Dr. Diwan presents evidence of biologic treatment benefits, including acellular therapy (e.g., exosomes, intradiscal fibrin sealant) and cellular therapy (e.g., PRP, autologous/allogenic stem cells). He also presents positive outcomes for people who were treated with PRP as an adjunct to treatments for back pain such as lumbar disc degeneration. He further discusses the evidence levels of PRP and MSCs as well as emerging therapy in the regenerative medicine field.
